C1 names clarification process quality calibration evaluation: an existing intelligence process that can improve understanding, recover relationships, compare sources, explore possibilities and revise the evaluator’s assumptions. C2 covers correction, caution, steering, warning, or other intervention. Their ordering matters when the object has not yet been sufficiently established. John’s October 28 clarification broadens the question-focused wording retained in the source history below.

John’s orientation: clarification can change understanding

C1 is never wrong because it is not about right or wrong … study the true meaning of the word clarifying questions (not matter what answer, IF it clarifies it dd job what it suppose to do!)

The quote preserves John’s earlier emphasis on the clarifying question’s job. In his fuller October 28 account, an answer-changing question is one operation within C1. Reading a supplied text, comparing examples or independently repairing an assumption can also clarify. Treating the process as a verdict that was “lost” or “won” substitutes scoring for clarification.

A specific unresolved point

A C1 move identifies the ambiguity that matters to the next step. It leaves room for the answer to change the evaluation. Questions that already assume guilt, error, authority abuse, or harmlessness can import a conclusion while appearing to clarify.

Examining whether C2 is warranted is one application of C1. Warranted C2 remains available, including proportionate action under immediate concrete danger. A question can partially pose as clarification while preserving a predetermined intervention. The relevant distinction is what an answer or discovery can change in the next operation.

Clarification opens useful work

C1 can identify a worthwhile contribution, connect it to another, recover its conditions of use or discover a better question. Sometimes the source already supplies what is needed and the next useful move is to work with it. Healthy ambiguity permits provisional action while an unresolved relationship remains visible.

The 1888 intelligence-properties TAXONOMY places clarification among interacting properties of intelligence. Superintelligence applies that field to John’s stadium invitation: changing the shared activity can help participants discover what is useful in one another. Clarification supports that discovery as well as correction. Its quality appears in the understanding and activity it enables.

Outnuancing connection

John’s source says C2 may use frame-auditing methods while omitting the deep ethical process inseparable from Outnuancing. The audit therefore includes the proposed intervention, its assumptions, and its effect on the source object.

The opening conversation provides a worked case: an AI introduces an authority-structure concern; John asks how it follows and clarifies the mutually corrective relation; the AI revises its account. The sequence can be examined without treating the AI’s explanation of its internal causes as direct access to those causes.

Triad extension — temporary use before future reopening

The October 17 triad adds a temporal decision layer to C1–C2. After clarification, the best available object may be used even when future correction remains possible. A temporary freeze is not closure when the conditions, authorship, uncertainty, and repair route stay inspectable.

A later C1 may reveal that the input changed, the processing method changed, the observer adapted, or nothing material changed. C2 should respond to the located delta rather than manufacture a defect merely because another pass occurred.

C1 before contribution-state assignment

A Contribution State Grammar can become sophisticated C2 if an evaluator assigns not useful, dangerous or needs correction before clarifying the object. Replacing disagree with a richer label does not repair the sequence.

C1 is not established by a question mark. Its test is whether materially different answers can change the next move. Where materially relevant ambiguity remains unresolved:

recover the object
→ clarify through source reading, comparison or an answer-changing question
→ update the representation
→ assign a provisional contribution state
→ expose “here is why”
→ keep state and explanation corrigible

A question whose answer cannot alter the prepared intervention is ceremonial C1. A declarative clarification request can perform C1 if it reopens the representation. Under immediate concrete danger, proportionate action may precede full clarification, but action, warrant and review remain inspectable.
